Ali Boulo Santo

Du Sénégal à la France où il demeure depuis une dizaine d’années, Dieourou Cissoko alias Ali Boulo Santo, d’origine Manding-Ko, ne vit pas une journée sans sa Kora dans les mains. Né à Thiès, au nord de Dakar, il est issu d’une lignée de plusieurs dizaines de générations de Griots.

Son père Bakary Cissoko, Griot célèbre et Chef d’Orchestre à la Gendarmerie Nationale de Dakar, l'initie à son tour à la Kora dès son plus jeune âge, dans la plus pure Tradition.

Cet artiste émérite, auteur-compositeur-interprète, passionné et singulièrement doué, se voit désigné comme le digne héritier de son grand-père Soundioulou Cissoko, surnommé « le Roi de la Kora ».

En 1992, il obtient le diplôme du Conservatoire National de Musique Traditionnelle de Dakar.

Doté d’une personnalité et d’une virtuosité hors normes, il choisit de se démarquer et s’engage vers sa propre voie artistique en prenant le pseudonyme d’Ali Boulo Santo avec pour symbole l’ouverture, la paix, la reconnaissance, tel le messager de valeurs essentielles qu’il véhicule dans son œuvre.

Pionnier-créateur à de la première Kora à pédale wah-wah à moins de 20 ans, il enrichit ainsi son répertoire de sonorités et de styles contemporains tout en mettant en valeur ses racines.

En 2000, Frédéric Galliano, saisi par le talent du jeune homme, l’engage pour un projet qui le conduit sur les plus grandes scènes du monde, avec l’Orchestre Maquisard International dont il est l’un des leaders puis avec le collectif « African Divas » au sein duquel il compose, chante et joue avec brio, entraînant la Kora, instrument traditionnel d’Afrique de l’Ouest, dans un environnement de musiques électroniques donc des plus actuelles.

Ali Boulo Santo apporte avec générosité tonalités inattendues, ose sur sa Kora des rythmes tels l’afro-beat, le rock en passant par le jazz, la pop, le folk, le reggae, la salsa ou le blues, sans craindre de les associer à son registre traditionnel confortant ainsi son génie de grand découvreur.

Son savoir-faire, sa voix profonde, ne manquent pas d’interpeler de prestigieux artistes. Il collabore avec des jazzmen parmi les plus réputés, Doudou Guiriand, les frères Belmondo, Tony Allen, Piers Faccini, Julien Baer et d’autres artistes de renommée internationale.

De ces différentes expériences naissent quatre albums majeurs : Ali Boulo Santo et Hadja Kouyaté, Ali Boulo Santo Komo Fellé et Farakala avec Trilok Gurtu, et son dernier en date "Hommage à Bakary" et nombre d'autres dans lesquels il participe en tant que chanteur, musicien, compositeur ou arrangeur tels Kirikou et Karaba, Racines du Ciel, Naturel et Silmakha avec Fania, New Cool Collective Jazz Band d’Amsterdam.

Sans relâche il poursuit sa voie et sa recherche autour de l’héritage familial, complète sa Kora d'effets multiples et bien ancré dans son temps, n’hésite pas à s’appuyer sur les atouts informatiques et électroniques pour faire évoluer son Art

Dans son dernier album, toujours plus novateur, il associe une grande variété d’instruments musicaux traditionnels et modernes de tous horizons, dans une fusion des genres et sans la moindre trahison culturelle, témoignant une fois encore de son esprit d'ouverture.

En toute discrétion, cet artiste insatiable consolide cette passerelle entre l’Afrique et l’Occident, optimise cette dualité qu’il représente, point de jonction entre Cultures et Musiques du Monde, avec humanité, sincérité et respect en demeurant toujours fidèle à lui-même.

From Sénégal to France, where he has been living for more than ten years, Dieourou Cissoko, also known as Ali Boulo Santo, of Manding-Ko origin, does not spend a single day without a Kora in his hands.

Born in Thiès, near Dakar, a descendant of dozens of Griot generations, his father Bakary Cissoko, Griot himself and well-known Conducter of the National Police Force of Dakar, in turn initiates his son at a very early age to the Kora in its most traditional form.

This skilled artist, author and composer, passionately enthusiastic and particularly talented, is soon recognised as the worthy successor of his Grandfather Soundioulou Cissoko alias “King of Kora”.

In 1992, he obtains a Diploma of the « Conservatoire National de Musique Traditionnelle » of Sénégal.

Endowed with a personality and talent in a class of his own, he engages on an artistic course of his own choosing taking up the pseudonym of Ali Boulo Santo (which in Manding-Ko means stretched-out open hands) which symbolises openness, peace, thankfulness and recognition, as per the essence of the themes contained in his work.

He is not yet 20 when he becomes the pioneer-inventer of the first Kora with wah-wah pedal, having at heart the enrichment of the repertoire of sounds and contemporary musical styles and at the same time preserving fundamental values.

In 2000, Frédéric Galliano, impressed by the talent of the young musician, picks him for a project which places him on the most well-known scenes of the planet, with « Orchestre Maquisard International » of which he is one of the leaders and the group « African Divas » with which he composes, sings and plays with maestria, introducing the Kora, this traditional West African instrument, into the most contemporary of musical environments.

Ali Boulo Santo displays with success and generosity, sounds and particular tonalities, venturing unexpected rhythms, from afro-beat to rock via jazz, pop, folk,reggae, salsa or the blues, without fearing associating them with his traditional repertoire comforting his genius as a great discoverer.

His know-how, his profound and deep voice, do not fail to draw the attention of prestigious artists. He has worked with well known jazzmen such as Doudou Guiriand, the brothers Belmondo, Tony Allen, Piers Faccini, Julien Baer and other world-known artists.

From these different experiences, three albums have come to fruition : “Ali Boulo Santo and Hadja Kouyaté, Ali Boulo Santo Komo Fellé and Farakala with Trilok Gurtu”, follow many others in which he participates either as singer, musician, composer or arranger : “Kirikou and Karaba, Racines du Ciel, Naturel and Silmakha with Fania, New Cool Collective Jazz Band of Amsterdam…”

Relentlessly, he pursues his path and search around his family heritage, adds to his Kora new pedals with multiple effects sourced in current times not hesitating to use computer and electronic devices to promote his artistry.

In 2009, Ali Boulo Santo sets himself a new task : the preparation of a new album still more innovative, opting for the association of a great variety of traditional and modern musical instruments, in characteristic fusion without betraying any of the culture.

In total discretion, this unsatiable artist consolidates this crossing between Africa and the West, optimises the duality that he represents, the junction between Cultures and the different forms of Music, humanely, with sincerity and respect, remaining this way faithful to his identity.
